Spirit of Place: New Mexico

Debra Moll
August 6 - September 25
Spirit of place refers to the unique, distinctive and cherished aspects of a place; often those celebrated by artists and writers, but also those cherished in folk tales, festivals and celebrations. It is thus as much in the invisible weave of culture (stories, art, memories, beliefs, histories, etc) as it is the tangible physical aspects of a place (monuments, boundaries, rivers, woods, architectural style, rural crafts styles, pathways, views, and so on) or its interpersonal aspects (the presence of relatives, friends and kindred spirits, and the like). My Camera in New Mexico
Photographs by Craig Varjabedian
June 3 - 30, 2011

Low-rider Cadillac named "Chimayo,"
An exhibition on the occasion of New Mexico's Statehood Centennial:
Craig Varjabedian is widely acclaimed for his images capturing the people and places of the American West. While his work reveals a deep grasp of the technical aspects of the photographic process, his gift is his intuitive ability to make authentic and compelling images that illuminate the inseparable ties between identity, place, and the act of perceiving—the "landscape behind the landscape."This exhibition of 24 photographs explores the beauty and mystery of New Mexico. Few states are as distinct from the American mainstream as New Mexico—the Land of Enchantment's flavor arises from sources that have touched no other state as strongly, nor as definitively.
