Summer 2020
From the Heart of Northern New Mexico

There was a record turnout for this year’s Santo Niño Festival of the Arts on Saturday April 23 2016 to honor Child Abuse Prevention Month and to announce The Most Reverend Archbishop of Santa Fe John C. Wester’s rededication of the Santo Niño de Atocha as the protector of Española Valley’s children and youth. Fr. Dominic Pierson, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church, the Parish of the Plaza de Española gave the invocation and dedication from the Archbishop. This year’s festival was special because it was sponsored by a major contributor to the NNMRAC Education Program and Choir, Juan Gabriel of Mexico. Brian Wingard and Mr. Juan Gabriel each received an Española Valley Children’s Choir t-shirt and a framed photo of the choir with accompanying signature of all the children. The presentation ceremony in the Mision was a sad occasion as everyone knew that this was Mr. Wingard’s last performance before heading to the University of New Orleans where he plans to pursue graduate studies in music with an emphasis in Jazz.
The City of New Orleans is the Birthplace of Jazz in America and Consequently in the World. We Wish Mr. Wingard Well in All His Endeavors!

NNMRAC Awarded $100,000 from 2010-16 by Granting Institutions
The Organization Received an Additional $50,000 from Individual Contributors & Donors
The largest single contribution was made to NNMRAC by Mr. Juan Gabriel of Mexico. He is a world renowned musician and singer. This contribution was unsolicited and came about due to Mr. James Espinoza. In addition to this donation NNMRAC received a grant from the Santa Fe Community Foundation and the United Way of Northern New Mexico in support of the arts education program. NM Arts has granted funding to NNMRAC for the past twelve years and this year we have received a sufficient rating to warrant a grant. NNMRAC has also submitted a grant to the United States Department of Agriculture for Rural Development to fund a joint venture with Northern NM College to offer courses that will help local artists to start, manage and improve their businesses. Professor Richard Overfield, past NNMRAC President of the Board, will be the instructor for the course. Notification will occur in the fall of 2016, if the grant is awarded. The program will start in the spring semester of 2017. Thank you to NNM College!
The NNMRAC Mission is Twofold
Arts Education Outreach to the Community & Serve the Needs of Local Artists
From 2010 through 2016 NNMRAC has played host to over 65 exhibitions of local artists in the Convento Gallery and the Bond House Museum. More than one hundred local artists were given the opportunity to show and sell their work over the past six years. Another sixty artists have their work on continuous consignment in the NNMRAC Convento Gallery throughout the year. This makes local artists’ work available to tourists who come to the Visitor Center in the Plaza de Española.
This year’s Santo Niño Festival featured two artists. Ed Millsap exhibited his tinwork in the Convento Gallery and Leopoldo E. Garcia’s unique wood figure carvings were featured in the Bond House Museum. Both opening receptions were held immediately after the EVHS Chorus and the Española Valley Children’s Choir had completed their benefit performance in the Mision on Saturday April 23. Mr. Garcia’s work will continue in the Bond House Museum through the first of July.
